Mexican Gothic: Chilling you to the Bones

Book Review:

Mexican Gothic ~ 4.75/5☆

🍁Noemí is a socialite who gets a frantic letter from her dear cousin Catarina who sounds in distress. So, she sets out to her cousin's marital house, The High Place. There she encounters her cousin's husband, who is both menacing and alluring, his father, the old patriarch who seems to be fascinated by her, his aunt, strict and disciplinarian, his cousin, her only ally in that place and the house itself, ancient and full of neglect. Noemí isn't really cut out for the sleuthing in her chic gowns and red lipstick, but she is tough and smart with an indomitable will, who slowly discovers the shocking secrets beneath the facade of the house, and may find that leaving the house is impossible...

🍁 What a book! This was a very mesmerizing read. I really liked Noemí and the way the story pans out. The horror of the novel sets in slowly, then all at once. But the only problem was that it took a little too much of a time to get to it.

I liked the characterization (some really gave the creeps!) and the setting was perfect: haunting, alluring and cinematic.

🍁 This was a very good horror read, and I'd strongly recommend this. The reveal at the end was truly horrific (I made the mistake of reading it late night and was rewarded with a buzzing brain that was about to burst) and there are quite a few grisly scenes.

🍁 This was my first book of Sylvia Monero-Garcia and this has made me want to read more of her (most likely starting from Jade and Shadow.)

🍁 Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, despite its slow start.
